New Spydercos go all premium

Two new Spyderco releases will have quite a few Spyderco fans digging into their savings. These two new designs, Farid Mehr's K-2 and the Slysz Bowie are priced $400 and $500 respectively. These two collaborations resulted in some heavy-duty, handsomely large, solid titanium knives.

Marcin Slysz (Марчин Слисз) is mostly known for his popular Spyderco Techno design while this is Mehr's first SPyderco collaboration, having previously designed numerous hard use custom knives for years.

Spyderco K-2

"Farid Mehr is a British custom knifemaker best known for his heavy-duty, hard-use knives. His first collaboration with Spyderco, the K2™, is a generously sized folding knife that definitely supports the designer’s reputation. Just shy of 10 inches (254mm) overall, it features a 4.53-inch (115mm) blade ground from CPM® 10V®—the first high-vanadium tool steel made using Crucible® steel’s Powder Metallurgy process. CPM 10V’s toughness and machining characteristics are comparable to D2 and M2, but it’s impressive 9.75% vanadium content gives it extreme wear resistance. In a knife blade, this translates to superior edge retention—a highly desirable quality for a hard-use folder.

To balance the strength of its broad Bowie-style blade, the K2 features a full-flat grind that tapers over its entire width to a keen PlainEdge™ cutting edge. The blade’s spine is also precisely radiused near the handle to provide a comfortable bearing point for the thumb and a Trademark Round Hole™ ensures positive one-handed opening.

The K2’s handle is also a study in strength. It consists of two extremely stout scales machined from solid titanium. The reverse scale forms the foundation of the knife’s sturdy Reeve Integral Lock (R.I.L.) and faithfully includes Farid’s signature serpentine cut on the lock bar. A stainless steel pocket clip attached near the pivot pin supports convenient right-side, tip-down carry.

Spyderco’s K2 combines the durability and heft that characterize Farid Mehr’s custom knives with the refined details that define Spyderco’s commitment to reliable high performance. "

Spyderco Slysz Bowie

"Marcin Slysz is a Polish custom knifemaker with a well-earned reputation for impeccable craftsmanship. His second collaborative design with Spyderco, the Slysz Bowie™ is a titanium-handled folding knife with a high-performance stainless steel blade and a Reeve Integral Lock (R.I.L.) mechanism.

The knife’s Bowie-style blade features a long, straight clip point with a radiused spine. It is precision ground from Carpenter® CTS® XHP powder metallurgy stainless steel—a state-of-the-art alloy that combines the enviable performance characteristics of D2 with a higher degree of corrosion resistance. The blade is full-flat ground for exceptional edge geometry and includes a section of “jimping” (grooves) on the thumb ramp for enhanced control during use. For easy one-handed operation, it also includes Spyderco’s Trademark Round Hole™.

The handle of the Slysz Bowie is constructed from two solid titanium scales, one of which forms the basis for its sturdy R.I.L. mechanism. Unlike most knives of its type that have flat scales, the scales of the Slysz Bowie are gently radiused across their entire width to offer much better ergonomics. They are also stonewashed to a dull battleship gray that enhances their grip texture and provides greater control during use. The butt end of the handle features a unique G-10 spacer with two sections of strategically placed jimping to further enhance the knife’s grip texture and aesthetic appeal. It’s also home to a reversible deep-pocket wire clip that supports left or right-side tip-up carry and rides low in the pocket for maximum discretion."
